DETAILED TOUR DESCRIPTION:
Your trip will begin with pick-up from your accommodation in Belgrade, and we head toward the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.
We will spend two hours of our ride enjoying the colorful landscapes of the Pannonian plain and hear stories about the turbulent history of this area.
Home to more than 25 ethnic groups, with six official languages in use, Vojvodina represents a diversity unheard of in the rest of the country.
Fine chernozem soils make Vojvodina the agricultural heart of Serbia, and the region supplies much of the country’s wheat and corn (maize). There is a saying in Vojvodina: “If you drop a button into the ground, next spring, you will harvest a full coat.”
Palić Lake
After a two-hour drive, we reach our first destination – Palić Lake. Only 8 kilometers away from Subotica, this lake has been one of the most visited locations in Serbia for many years, primarily because of its landscaping and beautiful early XX-century architecture.
It is the largest natural lake in Serbia, almost 5km in diameter and a maximum of 3.5 meters. The shore of the lake is 17 kilometers long, arranged along its entire length. According to a legend that the locals will gladly tell you about, Palić is a lake formed by shepherd Paul tears, who lost his flock there, and because of that, water in the lake is salty. During the relaxing walk, we will see the most significant attractions. Entrance Gate – Water Tower: The idea of architects was to enter the park through the richly decorated gate – Water Tower, The Grand Terrace, Music Pavillion, “Bogojvar “, also known as “Owl tower”.
Subotica City
After a pleasant time at the lake, we take a short drive to Subotica, known for its relaxed atmosphere, good food, and quality wines. Rich cultural heritage assets, lavishly decorated buildings, multicultural spirit, and European charm – these are the features that make this city distinctive. During a 1.5-hour walk, we will see the most famous landmarks: Ferenc Raichle’s Palace, which opened in 1904 and is a fascinating example of Art Nouveau architecture. The Synagogue in Subotica, built in 1902, is one of the most beautiful synagogues in this part of Europe. The Cathedral Of St. Theresa Of Avila was built in the late Baroque style from 1773 to 1779. Among locals, it is known as The Great Cathedral, which is dedicated to the patron of Subotica, St. Theresa of Avila, whose character is on the coat of arms of Subotica.
After a walk through the city center, you will have time to explore and enjoy Subotica’s streets and squares and taste the far-known local cuisine.
Sombor City
From Subotica, we continue to Sombor, a town widely known for its greenery, more precisely for the American hackberry tree, brought from the Mississippi Valley in 1903 and rightly bears “the greenest city in Europe” epithet. Walking through the center, we see several impressive sights: The Holy Trinity Square, The City Hall, The Church Of St George The Martyr (The Great Orthodox Church), The Carmelite Convent with the Church of St. Stephen the King…
After a peaceful day in the Vojvodina plains, we head back to Belgrade, with a planned arrival time in the early evening.
